Thoughts in the Course of Life

 The coverage of news and communication powerfully funded media dishes out to us can be fickle, ever changing and held captive by selfish interests.


Freedom of access to what we need to know, has been replaced by manipulation, of such a freedom, to that of us being subject to propanganda, political brain washing and strongly vested interests.


Here are some of the news that we are rarely reminded of.


That things and experiences we seem to get for free and access so easily rob us of more significant personal costs.


That promises to reimburse us, upon the occurence of specified events, regularly drain us of our earnings as cash cows.  Such parties can play on the emotion of fear, risk and misplaced assurance.


That repeated behaviour of consumers can be the most rewarding of revenue source to parties that sell products and services to them.


That market capitalism and privatisation increasingly do not work in the interests of ethical behaviour.


That nutrition, medicine and health treatments can start with what you regularly consume and your lifestyle -  ending up with what only takes care  of symptoms and not the cause of it all.


That constant reinforcement of beliefs, right, wrong or dubious, emphasised on to the public can eventually work.


Just reflect more of these in your personal and family experience.

Shantou Synergy - Markets

A Sunday morning walk seemed the perfect idea, especially when after several days in a foreign land, mostly taking in touristy sights.   The weather was all right, warm above twenty degrees Celsius, although with a cloudy outlook.  We wanted to feel what a weekend can be for the Shantou locals, and not just in trying the food, but in aiming to have a grassroots perspective.     Shantou, or Santow in Teochew, has its origins from the Song Dynasty  (960 to 1279 AD), and experienced massive devastation during the 1922 typhoon.   Almost a hundred years later, the city has bounced back, in no small part due to the grit, determination and passion of its people.    The Tropic of Cancer passes just north of the city and so the area has a sub-tropical climate. Aunty Gaik Lian's - Straits Chinese, Georgetown, Penang

A simple but appetising egg omelette as starters. Gulai Ikan Tumis or sour and spicy fish curry. The previous long standing branch of jewellers B.P De Silva, almost at the corner of Bishop and Beach streets in the old quarter of Georgetown, has a few months ago been transformed into a hub of Straits Chinese cuisine. Straddling two shop lots, located in an evening quiet location but near to the banking district on  business days, Aunty Gaik Lian's provides a refreshing change to the Nyonya food landscape on Penang island.  I have always found that the best Straits Chinese food is found in homes in Penang, like what my Mum dishes out, and it has been exasperating to be really satisfied with commercial outlets in this cuisine.  The Penang variation of such Peranakan food tends to be more influenced by ingredients and cooking styles from Thailand and the Malayan peninsular , when compared to the Malacca version (with more of stronger Indonesian influences and the ...
